Frequently Asked Questions
While we hope that the information contained on our website is helpful to you and answers most of you questions, please feel free to contact us directly with any additional questions. This list is included to help answer some of the more common questions that we receive.
If you are interested in attending one of Forest Home’s programmed camps or retreats, please see the main navigation menu above or contact our office.
If you are interested in having Forest Home host your own camp or retreat, or for questions about other kinds of events, please contact our Guest Group Reservations team at (909) 389-4404 or groupreservations@foresthome.org.
Click on the site name for a link to weather information for our Mill Creek Canyon or Ojai Valley site. Due to the mountain climate of our Mill Creek Canyon site and the coastal desert climate of our Ojai Valley site, it is not unusual for temperatures to vary greatly over the course of a single day.
Our Mill Creek Canyon site averages about 5280 feet (a mile high).
Our Ojai Valley site is at about 730 feet.
You may notice when you visit us we now have cell-phone service in the canyon. Because of our commitment to providing our guests with Sanctuary and Solitude, a core value, Forest Home is making the decision to remain a cell-phone free place. This means that we will continue to ask our youth campers to leave all electronics (including cell-phones) at home and ask that all of our guests join us in our efforts to keep our open/public areas at Forest Home cell-phone free.
You can find a packing list for camp under your specific camp program. Locate your program by going to "Camps & Programs" selecting your specific age group in the drop down menu, and then clicking on the program you are attending. Once on that page you will find a link to the left titled "How to Prepare". Please keep in mind that weather shifts can happen quite suddenly at either location, so always come prepared for hot/cold or wet/dry weather. Please familiarize yourself with the accommodations at each of our camping centers as the linen provisions vary widely depending on your particular housing. Look under your camp center in the main menu or call if you need help knowing the difference.
Generally speaking you do not want to bring “dressy” clothes to most programs (although one nicer outfit is not a bad idea). Camp is a rugged environment and you will likely get dirty one way or another. In general, our expectations for camp attire are driven by modesty, showing sensitivity to the concerns of others at camp. In our swimming areas, we ask that gals wear one-piece bathing suits (no bikinis or tankinis) and that guys stay away from revealing briefs. We will also limit swimwear to appropriate areas only.
A camp center is simply one of our areas of camp. At our Mill Creek Canyon site, there are 6 distinct camp centers. They are: Lakeview, Creekside, Forest Center, Adventure Mountain, Indian Village, and the Woodlands.
Our Ojai Valley site is both a “site” and a “camp center,” but there is just the one camp center at Ojai Valley.
Forest Home owns two distinct properties in southern California. Our Mill Creek Canyon site is located in Forest Falls, California in the San Bernardino Mountains. Please see the “camp Centers” question above. Ojai Valley is located in Ventura County near the coast, in Oak View, California, about 3 hours away from Mill Creek Canyon.
You’ll want to start by looking at the promotional materials for your camp or retreat via Camps & Programs under the main menu. If that information is not sufficient, please contact one of our offices and we will direct you to the right person for further information.
Most of our commonly used forms can be found here.
We frequently offer vegetarian options, sometimes by request only. While we cannot guarantee that there is no possibility that you will not contact nuts, we use a nut-free menu and make every effort to avoid products containing nuts. You can contact your registrar or guest services staff to indicate any advance needs. If you wish to discuss special dietary conditions, please contact Nathan Zickert at (909) 389-2286.
Our facilities are rugged and inherently connected to nature; with rocks, tree debris, unpaved walkways, and steep vertical grades. That said, we do have some ability to accommodate persons with disabilities, and have many guests with disabilities each year. This varies quite a bit by camp center, so the best course of action is to speak with our staff about your particular needs. Please call one of our offices for further information.
We have platform tent accommodations available, but not standard camping where you bring your own portable tent. We presently do not have RV hookups available, although we hope to be able to do so at Ojai Valley in the future.
No. Forest Home is an independent Christian organization with no denominational affiliations. Please see our Statement of Faith for our basic theological beliefs.
Counselors can be added last-minute. They will need to complete the appropriate paperwork, and upon arrival at camp, will have a background check performed.
Yes, all church staff that will be having direct interaction with campers on the grounds of Forest Home must have completed the Voluntary Disclosure Statement prior to arrival and have a Background Check performed.
It is illegal to share information received in a Background Check with outside parties, even if those parties are required to obtain the same information. To stay within compliance of the law, Forest Home must perform separate Background Checks.
Yes. We will have separate refrigerated storage in each of the Camps for medications only.
These are regulations mandated by the State of California, and they apply to all organized Camps. Hundreds of camps statewide must implement these new regulations at the same time that Forest Home does. We are glad to do anything that increases our level of safety for our guests.
