Class Rotations
Sessions are conducted on a rotating
basis, with each group of students
taking their turn in each class or activity.
Our curriculum is marked by certain
standard classes that typically make
up the core of our program. There are
other classes that round out your
experience. Not all classes listed below
will be a part of every program, but
these listings are provided as a
representative sample.
Beginning Botany (Plants)
Students are introduced to common varieties of plants found in our area. As they
investigate our grounds, they will learn some of the identifying characteristics of
many trees, shrubs, and flowers that they see every day.
Edible Plants
Not only will you have the chance to learn about edible and medicinal plants, but
during this traditional favorite, students will have the chance to taste and smell various
plants as well. Our experienced naturalists will also distinguish between edible
and hazardous plants.
Ornithology (Birds)
Students will learn about birds and their anatomy as they search high and low to
find many varieties of our feathered friends. This class begins with bird
models and then heards out to listen for bird calls, look for
nests, and identify bird habitats.
Tie-Dye Chemistry
Chemistry, art, and fun combine in this
great hands-on class. Students will
gain a basic understanding of chemical
bonds, see how primary colors
blend to create secondary colors,
and have a great time designing
a colorful shirt that they will take
home with them!
Hand Drumming and Rhythm
Anyone can bang on a drum, but in this exciting class,
participants learn about beats and rhythms
and how they work together to form
the backbone for all music. Then
they will have the chance to try their
hand at leading a drum circle as
everyone joins in together.
Zipline
For many, this is a chance to stare fear in
the face and overcome it. For others it is
just plain fun. This is often the highlight,
as students leap from the platform and feel
the thrill of flight.
Climbing Wall
Students will take the challenge to find the right holds and make their way to the top
of our three story climbing wall. Other class members provide encouragement and
coaching from the ground far below.
Creepy Crawlies
This study of insects and spiders will teach students about some of our common
neighbors and housemates. They aren’t just gross, they serve an important role
within our environment. We’ll turn over rocks and look in dark places to find all sorts
of great bugs.
Some of the other classes that may be part of the class rotations during your program
include (but are not limited to): reptiles, geology, drama, scavenger hunt, bats and
nocturnal animals, local mammals, creek/river study, and wilderness survival.
Large Group Sessions
In addition to the smaller group rotations, there are some sessions that involve the
entire camp. Often these activities and classes take place in the
evening or on the last day of EXPED. These include some of
the following:
| • |
Campfire Songs and Tales |
| • |
Sensory Night Hike |
| • |
Astronomy Night Hike |
| • |
Team Building Challenges |
| • |
A Visit from the Ojai Raptor Center
(With live birds and/or snakes!) |
