SUMMER RESIDENTIAL STAFF JOB DESCRIPTIONS
OJAI VALLEY
(Junior High and High School)
Each member of the Ojai Valley staff will have the opportunity of serving God in a variety of ways. While each staff member will have a specific role each week, most staff members will be involved in both program and recreational ministries. Each staff member will also assist in weekly “clean sweep” involving accommodations and grounds-keeping responsibilities. This unique camp staff experience calls for “generalists” (willing to be involved in all facets of camp life) with “specialist” gifts and talents. It is key that each staff member demonstrate flexibility, willingness, etc. and a deep commitment to the Ojai Valley staff community.
POSITIONS
In most cases, staff will be hired as generalists. This means they may be serving in key positions different weeks. For example, a staff member might serve as a team leader for 2 weeks, recreation staff for 2 weeks and the media specialist for 2 weeks. Many of the positions listed below are combined for 1 weekly position. For example, 1 staff member may be on recreation staff and also the media specialist or music leader and recreation staff. All positions include the responsibility of building intentional relationships with campers, counselors and staff.
It is essential that applicants understand that the staff community functions as the body of Christ, with all positions being of equal service to God. Each staff member must be flexible and willing to serve in any position any time they are asked.
QUALIFICATIONS
Staff members must be spiritually mature, teachable, flexible, possess strong social and relational skills, hardworking and able to share Christ with others. Experience working with junior high and high school students is preferred.
PROGRAM
PROGRAM COORDINATOR [1] - Works closely with Program Director in coordinating program for Ojai Valley. Responsible for general program details, camp photos, bus lists, surf sign-ups, camp store and assisting Guest Services Coordinator with registration. Builds relationships with and provides hospitality to staff, campers and counselors. Organizational and secretarial qualities are a must.
PROGRAM ASSISTANT [1] - Works closely with the Program Director in coordinating the program for Ojai Valley. Oversees program staff. Shares responsibility for program development, staff training, counselor training, camper enrichment and discipline. Provides up-front leadership at meetings and other all-camp activities; evaluates program and staff on an on-going basis. Assists in maintaining staff community by encouraging them in their relationships with God and one another. Public speaking experience necessary. Management in a camp atmosphere required.
TEAM LEADERS [4] - Oversees team of campers and counselors. Promotes enthusiasm by encouraging team and by incorporating the theme into aspect of the program. Conducts daily team meetings. Builds relationships with team members. Assists counselors when needed. Responsible for doing night rounds and surf class transportation. Assists with beach day setup and coordination. Assists in field, pool and beach competitions. Must be energetic and enthusiastic as well as mature in leadership.
VIDEO SPECIALIST [1] - Captures both video and still footage weekly. Edits and creates weekly videos. Responsible for uploading weekly photos for website. Oversees care and security of video equipment. Assists with program and recreation as needed. Experience in video editing required.
MEDIA SPECIALIST [1] - Coordinates sounds/media setup at daily meetings and on beach day. Oversees care and security of media equipment. Assists Video Specialist as needed. Assists with program and recreation as needed. Experience in audio/visual required.
MUSIC LEADER [1] – Coordinates musical worship for morning gatherings, which prepares students for their solo time. Assists in recreation and program as assigned. Must possess a passion for music ministry as well as organizational skills. Experience leading worship for junior high and high school students is required.
SURFING SPECIALIST [1] - Oversees all surfing activities at State Beach (including dawn patrol and afternoon classes). Organizes transportation of campers and equipment. Properly organizes and cleans surf equipment. Available on beach day to instruct campers. Builds relationships with counselors and campers. Experienced surfer preferred. Certification in Ocean Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR required.
RECREATION
RECREATION ASSISTANT [1] – Trains and oversees recreation staff and organizes their daily schedule. Assists Program Director with inventory, ordering, safety and maintenance. Assists in all recreation and program as needed. Current certifications in First Aid, CPR and Lifeguarding preferred. Leadership and teaching ability required. Experience with recreation preferred.
RECREATION STAFF [12 Total, Minimum 6 Lifeguards] – Recreation staff are trained to lead a variety of outdoor activities including: the climbing wall, zip line, mountain boarding, mountain biking, pool, skateboarding, crafts and rec deck activities. Recreation staff will also be involved in the camp program by assisting in team competitions as well as participating in a variety of program activities. Additionally, staff will be responsible for daily tasks in accommodations, maintenance etc. Current certifications in Lifeguarding, First Aid and CPR are preferred. Must be at least 18 years of age.
FIRST AID AND ADMINISTRATION
MEDIC [1] – Oversee all First Aid Services, in providing first aid, triage and coordinating transport to the nearest medical facility when necessary for all campers, counselors and summer residential staff. Dispenses daily medications to students. Works closely with the General Manager and local Camp Doctor in providing quality care. On-call for emergencies during programmed camps (24 hours a day). EMT or RN required.
REGISTRATION ASSISTANT [1] - Assist with summer registration administrative duties including breakdown of housing and team assigning for upcoming week of program & processing weekly evaluations.
Be in contact with summer Youth Pastors to obtain any necessary payments and paperwork. Prepare check in packets for incoming groups. Help register summer campers during Sunday afternoon check in. Perform data entry to create name and bus lists for staff and medic. Sort and disburse camper and summer staff mail. Part time hours Thurs., Fri., and Sun. Administrative experience helpful.
BUILDING AND GROUNDS, ACCOMODATIONS
B & G ASSISTANT [1] Works closely with Director of Operations and the General Manager in the maintenance of camp. Performs routine accommodation responsibilities as well as daily maintenance tasks. Assists with program and recreation as needed. Experience in maintenance preferred.
ACCOMODATIONS (A) TEAM LEAD/COUNSELOR [1] Works closely with Director of Operation to fulfill the camp accommodation responsibilities. Oversees A-Team Program (high school volunteers who serve the Lord by cleaning camp for the week. In addition, they have times of spiritual encouragement together). Performs routine and detailed cleaning tasks. In some cases, oversees and trains summer staff in accommodations.
