What will I experience at Home for the Holidays?

Take a break from the craziness of the holiday season and escape to the mountains. We have a dynamic speaker that will challenge your spiritual walk. Your children will be loved and taught in fun, age-specific programs throughout the day and tenderly cared for in your cabin in the evenings by your family’s very own Child Care Assistant. Every detail of this retreat is designed for you and your family to spend quality time together and spend time reflecting on He who “Dwelt Among Us”.

Jason Carson is the Senior Pastor of Encounter Church in Mission Viejo, CA. He loves his family more than anything on the planet. Jason and his wife Julie were married in 1998 and have 4 amazing children: Halley, Lucy, Janey, and Shane. Jason was the Youth Pastor at Mission Hills Community Church in Rancho Santa Margarita for 14 years and saw it grow from 11 to 160. After transitioning to adult and family ministry for a couple of years, Jason got the clear call from God to plant a church in his hometown of Mission Viejo in March of 2015. His true passion is shepherding people and caring for them as they encounter a life changing God and become passionate followers of Christ.

Formerly, Jason was the founding member of The OC Supertones, one of the most popular bands in all of Christian music. While serving in the band, Jason delivered the message of the gospel to over one million people. He has spoken at numerous Harvest Crusades, Billy Graham crusades, Food for the Hungry events, Creation festivals, for the Pope, and at several youth camps. Before the band, Jason worked as a small group leader, teacher, worship leader and youth director at Mission Hills Church in Mission Viejo, CA for 7 years.

Jason graduated with a degree in Pastoral Ministries from Vanguard University in Southern California.

Tommy Hilliker is the Campus Chaplin at Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, CA. He and his wife Amy reside in Lake Forest, California with their 3 wonderful children: Kaylie, Cassidy and Caleb. Tommy was the Pastor of Ministry at Saddleback Church for the last 18 years before transitioning to Vanguard University. He graduated from Golden Gate Seminary with a Masters of Divinity and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Counseling Psychology from Liberty University.

Camp will be a relaxing and fun experience, so bring comfortable shoes and clothing. We recommend a pair of sturdy shoes (you may want to do some hiking), a jacket or layers for the evenings, personal toiletries, flashlight, water bottle, a tote, a journal and pen, and most importantly, your Bible. We have had snow at Home for the Holidays in prior years, so please make sure to check the weather forecast before arrival to better prepare for the mountain weather. You will want to bring spending money if you’re interested in trying our tasty Clubhouse burgers and milkshakes or enjoying our home-roasted coffee or fresh teas at the Stagecoach Coffee Company.
Note: Bed and bath linens provided in Preferred Housing, Grace House, Cedar Ridge, and Engle house only.

The goal of our Forest Home Guest Dining is to prepare meals that nourish and satisfy our guests. If you have food allergies, please provide your information to registration through the forms provided prior to your arrival. The prayer and desire of our team is to set a purposeful table, rooted in the ministry of hospitality, that creates space for fellowship and glorifies the Lord.

  • The Child Care Assistant (CCA) Program is designed to enrich your family’s weekend at camp. We hire a group of female teen leaders to serve families by assisting in day camps each morning and baby-sitting each evening. When Childcare Assistants are not with your children, they participate in dynamic camp programs of their own, designed to support and encourage them in their spiritual growth.

  • All families with children ages 10 and younger are automatically assigned a CCA. If you decide you don’t need a CCA, please let us know.
  • Our desire is that each family has a personal CCA for the entirety of the weekend. There are times when this is not possible due to a shortage of CCAs or changes due to illness or other unforeseen situations. We will make sure to communicate with you if any changes or shortages occur.
  • Our CCAs have submitted an application and personal reference form in order to be accepted. Each CCA must be comfortable working with children, have a relationship with Jesus, and be at least 13 years old.
  • Each CCA participates in an orientation meeting to discuss the following: safety and emergency procedures, Biblical view of service, philosophy of Family Camp and the role of CCAs, childcare best practices and reminders, expectations for behavior and community living.
  • We have many evening activities available to your children, games in The Den, checking out books and toys in Chipmunk Corner, etc). Please advise your CCA on what options you have approved as well as routines and bedtime schedules.
  • All CCAs and children (unless they are in Youth night programs) must be back in your cabin for “kid’s curfew” at 8:30pm. Our CCA staff stop at each cabin around that time to check on all kids and CCAs. We are available to help with bedtime or need. If you would like your child and CCA to stay out past 8:30pm, please write a note and put it near your cabin door.
  • CCAs are at your service until you release them at the end of each night. Their curfew to return to their own cabin is 10:00pm unless they are still babysitting. If you choose to stay out past 10:00pm your CCA may be replaced with either a CCA Staff member or a Leadership CCA.
  • When you are in for the evening, please have a female adult family member walk the CCA back to Chipmunk Corner to sign herself in. If an adult female is not available, please come to Chipmunk Corner first and another CCA or one of our staff members will accompany you to your cabin to walk your CCA back to Chipmunk Corner.
  • You will have the opportunity to request a CCA or afternoon babysitting. You will be able to request this from a CCA staff member at family breakfast. We request that you do not ask your evening CCA to use her free time to babysit, but instead allow us to ask if she would like to babysit in the afternoon to avoid her feeling pressured to do so. If your usual evening CCA is not available, we will find another capable babysitter for that afternoon. We also ask that if you hire an afternoon CCA to provide compensation for her time.

Forest Home sits on 500 acres of San Bernadino Mountain wilderness. We hope you can experience the wonder of God’s creation during your stay.
