Kaden couldn’t contain his excitement when I suggested we build his new Estes Crossfire ISX rocket he recently got. The packaging boasted it would soar 1,100 ft. Woohoo!
We laid out the materials. The instructions called for plastic cement to secure the engine nozzle. Dad missed this detail and we were left without the right glue. Ugh. We spent three hours building and painting the rocket to arrive at the final step… to secure the engine nozzle. Without the proper glue, and in my impatience, I had a brilliant idea… Super Glue. This would save some time and a trip to the hobby store. What could go wrong?
Kaden held the rocket and I applied the Super Glue. The glue dried before I got the nozzle into place. It now blocked the engine mount entrance… which meant no engines could be inserted into the rocket. I ruined Kaden’s project with my “brilliant” alternate plan, resulting in tears and tension.
I’m reminded of Abraham and Sarah’s “speedier plan” to bear a son through their servant Hagar (Genesis 16). Instead of following God’s instructions with patience, this Super Glue plan resulted in intense strife between all parties involved and led to a nation with “his hand against everyone and everyone’s hand against him” (Genesis 16:12).
Before we reach for the Super Glue, let’s patiently remember that God has a good and perfect plan with His promises waiting for us. He sees around every bend even though our sight is limited.
“Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD” (Psalm 27:14).
